PS2Room
My first attempt at PlayStation 2 development, and my entry for round 5 of The Third Creation, the rolling competition run by the ps2dev crowd.
What you are watching is a Newtek LightWave 7 scene played back on the console by jfyeNG, the engine I was writing at the time. It read LightWave 6.x and 7.x scenes and was already running under Linux and Win32 OpenGL; the PlayStation 2 was simply the next machine on the list. The scene itself — a room on fire, sallefeu.lws — belonged to Xbarr/Syndrome, who kindly let me use it, and the font came from Yoyo.
There is no music, and the readme says why: in the summer of 2002 the PlayStation 2 homebrew scene still had no XM module player. One arrived shortly afterwards, from Vzzrzzn.
The demo went out on 1 September 2002. The scrolltext is dated two days earlier and signs off at two in the morning, seven hours before work. It carries a special greeting to SG2 and LongChair, whom I had met at the VIP4 party in France two months before — they are the reason I looked at the PlayStation 2 at all — and then to the whole #ps2dev channel on EFnet: Jules, Dreamtime, Nagra, Adresd.
Everything was built with GCC-EE and runs over NapLink, Napalm’s link-cable tool, which loads the IOP module straight from the host directory. No Sony libraries anywhere. That was rather the point of the whole scene.
Adresd and Sjeep entered the same round.
