Sonic the Hedgehog on the Amstrad console

The project began in 2018 and took seven years. In October 2025 it was finished, and Sonic GX went out as a cartridge for the Amstrad GX-4000 and the Plus machines, with an instruction manual and a technical presentation alongside it.

It is worth saying plainly what a small group did here. Cédric “CeD” Quetier converted the graphics, Julien “Targhan” Névo the audio, Richard “TotO” Gatineau handled design and support, “Slype” wrote the instruction manual, and Arnaud “norecess464” Storq — me — wrote the code and designed the levels. Seven years of interest, support and encouragement from people watching kept it moving; that is not a courtesy, it is why it exists.

You can finish the game in about ten minutes if you speedrun it. Scoring well is another matter: the Chaos Emeralds are hidden across the levels, and finding them all is the real game.

Screenshots

Seven screens in the order the game shows them, from the Condense title to the first special stage. Any one of them opens full size.

The opening screen: CONDENSE TEAM PRESENTS, in white letters on black

The title screen: the winged Sonic the Hedgehog emblem above the sea, the coastline behind it

Green Hill Zone: Sonic climbing at the foot of a palm tree, five rings collected and three lives left

Green Hill Zone: Sonic running along the fence, a Motobug ahead of him and a trail of rings in the sky

The card announcing Jungle Zone, act 1, over the green foliage

Jungle Zone: Sonic rolled into a ball between the bamboo, above the stone blocks

START, spelt between the chequered flags at the head of the special stage road

The manual and the technical presentation

Both documents that shipped in the cartridge archive are here to read: the instruction manual in 20 pages, and the technical presentation in 100, which sets out how the game was fitted onto the machine. Any page opens full size; the originals can be downloaded whole — the manual and the technical presentation.

What was said about it on YouTube

Thirty videos about Sonic GX, in English, French, Italian, Polish and Greek: reviews, first looks, longplays and captures from real hardware. My own favourites come first, then the rest by how many have watched them. Each thumbnail opens the video on YouTube.

Development previews

Seven years is a long time to work in silence, so the game was shown as it came along. These three recordings are what was published while it was still being built — the dates are when each was presented, not when the game was finished.

Watched in order, they are the game arriving: a first look, then the Special Stage, then a version close to what shipped.

Réalité impressive Work. Bravo norecess, Ced and Targhan for this piece of masterclass on gx4000. Chapeau bas l’équipe 🙏

I haven’t seen this version in real yet. However, I’ve been following the development of the GX-4000 on your YouTube channel. What can I say? The screenshots and the technical aspects are simply insane!

OMG ! Congratulations to all the team ! Arnaud, Ced, Targhan, Nice to see you again ay bnd coding party 5.

This made my weekend. And the next.

Gryzor, 2025-11-01 · rulez

Finally it’s out! I tested only little bit on emulator and the controls seemed floaty but maybe it’s the emulator which also stutters for other reasons now. I will very soon try it on my GX4000.

Optimus, 2025-11-01 · rulez

Congratulations on this achievement! The work done on this game is colossal! Well done to the entire team for this exceptional work. This game undoubtedly marks a new milestone in game production on the CPC.

Wow! Looks really smooth. Sonic is kind of the benchmark when it comes to 2d platform engines with its fast scrolling and angular platforms

Amazing work! Congratulations to the whole team. I’ve never played Sonic, but I’d say it feels just like the SEGA console version. Still, I have a nephew who’s a huge Sonic fan, and I’m going to let him play it to see what he thinks. :)

Tronic_GPA, 2025-11-02 · rulez

Just to clarify I was trying to let you know someone was already trying to sell your work on ebay. I am a CPC creator myself and know how frustrating it is when people steal your work to make profit for themselves. Bruno Kulkan and Eric Titan can confirm my identity. I am Phil Sandiford (Yellowbelly) i am creator of Bugs Quest and Xyphoes nightmare. i put the link in so you could possibly take action against them. i am not the ebay seller. sorry for any confusion was trying to help protect your work.

YBSoftware, 2025-11-02

What an incredible amount of hours and collective effort to make this happen ?! The knowledge gathered + created by NoRecess about the performances of the GX4000 should probably end up in a book. Bravo, it’s obvious how much this project is the result of several YEARS of challenging the GX4000 architecture

med, 2025-11-02 · rulez

Kind of game I didn’t expected on the GX4000 hardware, due to the sprite limitations. Really nice job, it seems very close to other commercial releases (I have to play the Master System version again to check for differences). No Recess for president ! Who can produce new batches of C4CPC or similar card to play this gem on a real CPC ?

tometjerry, 2025-11-02 · rulez

excellent work i hope to be as good as this one day in the future, although i am getting old

YBSoftware, 2025-11-02 · rulez

Soundy, 2025-11-02 · rulez

Here in Argentina, Amstrad platforms were never popular. In fact, we produced an official PAL-N version of the Commodore 64, and the MSX was a distant second. However, in terms of consoles, the Mega Drive was a massive success here, to the point that unlicensed clones are still manufactured locally today, and consequently, Sonic is quite popular in these parts. And that’s how I discovered this port for the Amstrad Plus. I was completely unfamiliar with this hardware, but I followed the development. It looks not only incredible, but the sheer number of effects without any slowdown is remarkable. My applause to whoever made this, and I hope it opens the door to porting it to other systems of the era.

JasonBlueX, 2025-11-03

Succeeding in making us forget that we are playing on an Amstrad PLUS is imho a sign of great success for a game or demo. No doubt that this game will go down in history! Very impressive showcase for the Amstrad GX4000. Even more impressive is that it’s a full game. Making a cool tech demo with limited content is no small feat, but making a fully polished game takes 20x as much time.
