What is there to say about the news right now ? Not much has really changed since the first issue, where I wrote a splendid rubrique.
Still… that is no reason to write nothing ! So here goes…
Er… I may well write a few articles for PHASER, the disc fanzine of the A.F.C. (a club I said quite enough about last time, I think), and articles for M&C as well.
Speaking of which, M&C is a brilliant paper fanzine, made by the group I belong to: SCORPION. Order it right now at this address:
M&C - SONIC 3' - SCORPION 38, rue Francis de Pressensé 94500 CHAMPIGNY SUR MARNE
While we are on fanzines: read BABA FANZ too, a fanzine far too little known, if you ask me ! Here is the address to order it:
GEORGEL Gregory 6, la Sauteure 88640 GRANGES SUR VOLOGNE
Puff, puff… This article is hard work ! Oh yes, the POWER SYSTEM MEGADEMO is finally out ! No, this is not a joke… I could not review it in the demo rubrique (it reached me too late) but I can tell you it is brilliant, and even better than THE DEMO. Antoine PITROU has, in my opinion, made the best demo on the CPC, and it is in that megademo… I will give it a review of its own in GHOUL'S FANZ 3 !
There, I was just talking about Antoine PITROU… To my mind, Antoine is the “FACE HUGGER” of the CPC scene. In the POWER SYSTEM MEGADEMO he has developed techniques still entirely new on the CPC, and more than impressive ! But I may be drifting away from this rubrique a little…
You surely know CATLOC (that brilliant Greek coder) — well, he has decided to make a disc fanzine called FOCUS…
Wot ? Is that all ?
Well… er, yes !
Sorry for the lack of news, but I cannot say more ! Next time I will spend more time on this rubrique, promise…

Before we start, know that I've coded, just for you, an example program that puts on screen the techniques used last time and the ones revealed today. To see this program, simply press ESC...
So what interesting stuff am I going to talk about? Last time I told you about a few tricks for creating multi-mode effects and changing the colours, and also about how to position yourself on the screen (thanks to the HALT instruction)...
Well, we're going to start with rasters... Rasters are multicoloured bars that can be displayed in every mode (even in MODE 2!), and wherever you want, with whatever colours you want...
I'm going to teach you how to display a simple little raster. A raster is, in fact, a colour change of one ink. Remember last time, we changed the colours every HALT. And what if we changed the colours every line? That makes a raster! Yeah but... is that hard to pull off? Naah... Let me explain: in fact, all you have to do is change the colour of an ink during the electron gun's journey (don't run away, it's simple!). Here's the electron gun's journey: it starts at the top of the screen, moves to the right, and once it reaches the end of the line, it goes on to the next line, and so on! You should know that the electron gun's journey along one line takes 64 microseconds. You surely know how long an instruction takes. While an instruction is being executed, the electron gun keeps going on its way...
Now let's get to how to make a raster. Go to the start of a line. Change the colour of an ink (as I taught you to do last time) and wait for the next line (a bit less than 64 microseconds, since changing the colours takes time!).
So much for rasters! Now we move on to wave effects... You know Register 2, that register that lets you move the screen (no?)... The principle is exactly the same as for rasters, but instead of changing the ink, you change Register 2!
So, not really any comments to make...
In GHOUL'S FANZ 3, I'll show you a few nice tricks to do with rasters (checkerboards, or like the effect in BORDELIK MEETING 3). Next time, we'll get down to the serious stuff!
By the way, you should know that this kind of routine is generally only found in demos...

CDemos
Translated from the text published in 1994.
I'm going to review the following demos:
- MOPS MEGADEMO
- SOUNDTRAKKER DEMO
- CATLOC PREMIERE MEGADEMO
Right, I'll start with a very nice demo which is, in fact, the first demo by a new German team called MOPS (or MOVING PIXELS). This demo is made up of 7 parts plus 1 menu. So let's begin this review with the menu. A vertical overscan with the menu appears after a fairly short loading time. Behind the menu, you can see stars moving in 3D that give you the feeling of being in space. You load the demo's parts with a simple press on the keys numbered 1 to 7. The first part is ABLAZE's first demo and it's rather primitive. A little scroller (surely done with LDIRs) but one pretty cool effect: a little ball moving from top to bottom, following, along a rotating axis from left to right, an effect of 3D. (You didn't get me ? Neither did I !). On to ABLAZE's second demo. More technical already: you find in it a kind of far too ugly Screen-Waggle, a giant scrolling (created with the help of a rupture), and a few rasters (badly synchronised all the same) plus a vumeter going with a SOUNDTRAKKER tune. Nothing special to report, so I move on to the third part of the demo, which is one of the best parts of this megademo since it was made by FACE HUGGER. (I am glad to see that FACE HUGGER has not left the CPC !). What you are going to see is in fact neither more nor less than an effect common on the AMIGA: rotations. Oh yes, that effect is not reserved for the 16 BIT alone ! Right, you will be able to change a few images for the rotation. On to the fourth part ! You know PRODATRON's demo called DIGITAL ORGASM (I reviewed it in the first issue of GHOUL'S FANZ) ? Well, this part is a clone of the second part of PRODATRON's demo. Balls giving the illusion of 3D move about in every direction (a bit like the menu). And here again (as in DIGITAL ORGASM), an editor is offered to you ! That way you can easily change the path of the balls or their axis in X, or do all sorts of nice things of that kind. The music is excellent ! On to the next part. Meh, not great, I would rather skip to the one after. It was made by JAYSOFT, the author of the excellent game SPOTS. In this part, in fact, all you will see is a Wave-Scroller. Meh, this part is not brilliant either... On to the seventh and last part of this megademo. The effect takes up the whole screen and consists in displaying MOPS and MOD along a rotating axis (I do like that expression, apparently !). Mmyeah, meh even, you get bored by the end ! There you go, that is all there is to say about this demo.
Conclusion: it's a demo to own, every bit as much as "THE DEMO". It's brilliant!
Phew... What a pain that review was! Next time, I won't go through every single part... Right, on to another demo! The demo I'm going to review is called SOUNDTRAKKER DEMO and was created by EPSILON. This demo has nothing to do with the SOUNDTRAKKER music compilation he made a little while ago. So in this demo, nothing special. No, no scrollers, no special effects here, only the music counts. Let me explain: an overscan screen, a writer and just 41 tunes. Heh heh heh yes, you read that right, 41! The CPC6128's memory is crammed to bursting with SOUNDTRAKKER muzaxx! Just one complaint: EPSILON could have put a little vumeter in his demo... Well, this demo isn't an absolute must-have, but it still deserves a place in your software collection!
Come on, off we go! On to another demo... I'm happy because this is a demo that comes to us from Greece and is called CATLOC PREMIERE MEGADEMO. It was created by CATLOC (who would have guessed...). You should know that CATLOC is not only one of my contacts, but also the leader of the Greek scene. This demo is made up of 6 parts, an introduction and some hidden parts. The introduction is quite nice, you see the demo's title in the form of rasters... You then get to the menu by pressing the space bar. The music is brilliant (it comes from the game XYPHOES FANTASY). To choose a part, you have to point a little arrow at a little coloured circle. That's an original idea! At the bottom, there's a big scroller. The first part is... rubbish. Pressing the ESC key takes you to a hidden part. A tune from XIPHOES FANTASY and a logo that moves (thanks to the registers) a bit fast. The second part is beautiful (lots of colours), but I don't like the music (taken from the game 1943). No technical feats there either... The third and fourth parts are cool, in overscan of course, but I can't remember them any more... So I'll move on to the fifth. Pretty cool demo, with a hardware scroll that flickers (not smooth!). The sixth and last part is a part by JFMC (another Greek, a member of CHAOS, CATLOC's group). There's a horizontal overscan screen with a little scroller, and the music from GRYSOR goes along with it all... In the demo, there are surely 3 hidden parts. I discovered one in the menu by chance. A SOUNDTRAKKER tune and some beautiful graphics, and a scroller... Right, all the scrolls in the demo are hardware scrolls except the one in JFMC's part. All the parts are in overscan except the first. The demo's only black mark: the music. A third of the tunes are shit-awful! But the ones that made me prick up my ears are excellent. This demo is an absolute must-have! It fits on a single side (only!) because all the parts have been crunched... By the way, you should know that CATLOC has made loads of stuff (freewares, fanzines, demos (at least more than 20!), etc...). It's cool that there are still guys on CPC! And that's why I'm committing myself to bringing you as much information from Greece as I can. What's more, in August 1995 the EUROMEETING takes place in Greece! (the most famous meeting on CPC). For more information: write to me!
And there you go, that's it for this section! Next time, I'll review more demos, but inspiration just wasn't with me today!
By the way, to answer something from last time: YES, ONLY FOR YOUR EYES 2 is out, but I don't have it yet because of a strike at La POSTE that's starting to seriously get on my nerves!

DFanzines
Translated from the text published in 1994.
I'm going to review BOXON 2, the latest thing in fanzines...
The first issue was on paper, the second on disc, and the third will be on paper again.
This fanz fits on a jam-packed disc (files crunched thanks to ANTOINE PITROU's CHEESE CRUNCHER 1.1).
For now, BOXON has 2 writers, one called NICKY ONE and the other SPHYNX...
NICKY ONE took care of side A in its entirety, and SPHYNX of side B...
So we start with side A. After a pretty nice intro (you have to admit the wave effect isn't really beautiful...), you get to the menu (vertical overscan) which offers 8 options: EDITO, INFOS, DEMOS, BASIC, TEST, FUCK, FANZ, TURN DISC... I'm not going to describe everything at the risk of putting you to sleep... Just know that the 2 demos are the FANZ'Y MEETING and the SENTINEL DEMO, and that GHOUL'S WRITER gets reviewed (well, well... It gets the modest mark of... 20/20! OK, G.W. is good, but the mark is too high I think!). You'll also learn to do an interesting trick with redefinitions in BASIC... The TURN DISC is good, there's speech synthesis at the start. (At first I thought I heard "CHANY": actually it was TURN DISC...).
Right, side B now! Fewer sections here... The menu is in "total" overscan. You're offered 6 sections: EDITO (again!), CONTACTS, GAMES, POKES, DF4 (a review of that fanzine) and END. Actually, there's nothing really attractive in all those articles... It's not to criticise you, SPHYNX, but it's true: I think you could have taken a bit more time writing your articles! That said, it's still not too bad...
The final verdict! Side A is cooler than side B. But the whole thing overall is really cool. Indeed, there's a "musical loader" created by OFFSET (hey, your thing's a con, I bet it doesn't even load!). The fanzine is easy to read, the tunes are well chosen — in short, you can throw yourself at it without a blindfold on! A tip for all the tinkerers (like me...): if you're interested in the tunes on side A, grab ANTOINE PITROU's SUPER MONITOR RAZORMAID MIX 1994, load the section in question, execute at the init address, type "E", and there you go, you've got your SOUNDTRAKKER tune.
Right, to order it: write to this address...

EVideo games
Translated from the text published in 1994.
I'm going to review 2 games for today:
- MEGABLASTERS
- SPOTS 94
So I'll start with a game called MEGABLASTERS... It's a game created by ODIESOFT of HJT. (The HARDWIRED demo from the first issue was created by him). Unfortunately, I only have the playable demo containing 5 game levels. Still, that's enough to get an idea of the game.
There's a superb intro at the start. An ODIESOFT logo makes its appearance... On to the menu. A multitude of options are listed there. You can choose the number of players (2 max), the difficulty level, etc... Once your choice is made, you get the game's instructions on screen. Cool. Then at last comes the game itself. You know the game BOMBERMAN on SNES? Well, it's the same! Let me explain: you're a little guy who chucks bombs that explode on a delay. You have to drop these bombs next to each stone to blow them up. But you've also got enemies, and sometimes they're cunning! If you've lost and you've made a good score, you'll see a GAME OVER (the screen is a normal one: sniff). The most insane thing is that the music being played is a NIRVANA tune (Very Ape, from the album IN UTERO)...
Right, my conclusion on this game... This game is, honestly, THE best game on CPC. What I've described to you is one level. There are loads of them in the... original version!
On to another game!
SPOTS94. Forget the game on SNES or whatever, this is a puzzle game whose hero is the character from COOL SPOTS on console.
Right, this game was created by JAYSOFT of MOPS this time... It's shareware (40 francs). OK, picture yourself as a "virus". You have to "infect the others". You're on a board of 64 squares. The winner is whoever ends up with the most "microbes"... And there you go! Well, at least I managed not to ramble on about the principle for 2 hours! This game is really well made. The menu is huge (just like MEGABLASTERS)...
The presentation is CLEAN, the tunes are excellent — in short, it's all good stuff... Get hold of it!
Right, that's it!
By the way, the latest games released on CPC are excellent! (I'm thinking of MEGABLASTERS, PARANOIA, SPOTS, or a game that's due out, AVENTURY).
I strongly encourage demomakers to keep on creating games!

FTips
Translated from the text published in 1994.
Ha, now there's an interesting subject, and yet one never tackled in a fanzine, I give you: "THE ART OF CPC ORGANISATION..."
All the little tricks are about to be revealed to you! What I'm going to tell you is the experience of 5 years of adventure with the CPC...
Come on, let's get started!
You've no doubt noticed that 3-inch discs have become almost impossible to find, right? Since you need discs, you erase all your old programs... Well, I say NO! There's a better way, but it's less simple, and on top of that it takes a considerable amount of work... But I'll reveal the trick to you anyway! It consists of crunching all your programs. For that, use CHEESE CRUNCHER 1.1 by Antoine PITROU, the most powerful cruncher that has ever existed on our machines... But before erasing the original program, check that the new version works properly! Indeed, you can run into problems like graphics that won't crunch, that kind of thing. But here's the catch: CHEESE CRUNCHER 1.1 can't crunch very big files (36/37 kilobytes maximum). What to do? One solution: crunch the file first with a much less powerful cruncher... Why? It will knock a few kilobytes off your file, and then all you have to do is crunch it with CHEESE CRUNCHER 1.1. As a nice little cruncher, use the second version of ZENITH, which makes crunching very easy. For example, a demo by RIC, SEA YOU SOON. Originally it's 41 kilobytes. You crunch it with ZENITH 2, the demo has lost a few kilobytes. Then crunch it with CHEESE CRUNCHER and you get a demo of only 26 kilobytes! But there's a problem: if the program needs several files. In that case, whatever you do, don't crunch any file except the loader. Let me explain: take the EUROMEETING DEMO by LOGON SYSTEM and crunch the first part. And presto, the demo has lost a few kilobytes! But there's one limitation: this trick only works on binary files! Then again, hardly anyone still uses BASIC programs anyway, given how slow the language is... One more thing to say: software starting with ùCPM can't be crunched, and if you can't manage to crunch your files (length problem), then I'd advise you to "cut" your file into several pieces, but that's another story...
By the way, I didn't mention it, but to save even more space, use an extended DATA format in the style of DISC'o'MAGIC, which lets you handle 187 kilobytes on one side...
And above all: avoid scattering programs all over your discs! You've got 4 or 5 demos by the same group? Gather them together so you've got them all on the same side! That way, for example, if you want to get your hands on a MALIBU CRACKERS demo, you'll dig out one single disc and not 3 like you used to do...
Now, let's move on to something else... You've got loads of listings and other bits and bobs like that, and you're sick of always hunting for them? Make binders! They let you easily find your way to whatever stuff you've put in them, and without ending up tipping the bed over to find one blasted sheet of paper (hasn't that ever happened to you?)...
But that's not all! Keeping your discs tidy helps you find your way around, you know... Unfortunately, no matter how much I say it, I mess them up again every time, ah well, let's move on...
Got an old amplifier that's no use to you anymore? Use it to make a super loudspeaker for your CPC! Might as well tell you straight away: the sound you're hearing right now, if you don't own an amplifier, is the equivalent of about 50 per cent of the sound put out by an amplifier. The sound you get back is truly brilliant compared to that tiny 2 francs 50 loudspeaker stuck behind the CPC. But a problem comes up if you want to hook an amplifier up to your CPC. Indeed, if you look at the socket that takes a lead with two 3.5 Jack plugs, one at each end of the wire, you'll notice that this socket needs an amplifier... So take the cable and insert it into the keyboard's socket. I won't give you the trick for going through the DIN socket, because the CPC464 and CPC664 don't have that kind of socket. Right, where was I? Ah yes, the cable... So you make the connection between the amplifier and the CPC. Do a test with a program that has some music in it. But then, problem: one channel isn't played properly (the sound it puts out is quieter compared to the other channels). The solution (and what a pain in the arse it was to find, that solution!) is to pull the cable slightly out of the computer's socket. Depending on the brand of the cable, the cable won't stay in place, so in that case, put some whatsit there that can keep it from falling out (personally I use an old pencil sharpener that does the job of a wedge). Once that's done, set the sound towards the bass (the sound comes out better that way). From now on, the true worth of the DIGITRAKKER musics is all yours!
Personally, I had a serious problem: my keyboard stopped working! I'd switch on the CPC and all sorts of characters would come up on screen... If that's your case, the solution is to take your CPC apart (taking it apart is very simple to do, but watch out for the loudspeaker cable (remove the CPC's casing gently)). Take the keyboard apart (don't mix up the casing screws) and remove all the dust with a little paintbrush (no vacuum cleaners !)... Put your CPC carefully back together, taking good care to return every screw to its original place. If the operation has given no conclusive result: do not despair ! That is exactly what happened to me. Above all, do not take your CPC to a repair shop or anything of that sort ! You will pay through the nose (reckon on 500 francs just for the handling and the component if one is needed). No, what you must do is go and look in the small ads. You will surely find what you are after there, with free extras thrown in ! (I got hold of a CPC6128, an AMSTRAD clock radio and the tuner for the CTM644 (a device that lets you watch television on a CPC) for only 400 francs ! (What do you mean, you don't care about my life !?!). In any case, never despair !
You write regularly to friends? Then like me, you must be blowing a fortune on stamps! So here's a tip: buy your stamps at the economy rate... I don't really advise sending lots of discs in a single parcel, because if your mail gets lost, it's all your discs that go down the drain! Another trick (from ALN): avoid dropping 4 or 5 sendings at the same time into the same LETTERbox, this to avoid mysterious losses... Finally, for those who, just like me, have contacts abroad, the economy-rate trick still holds as long as your sending goes no further than the E.E.C... (so pay 3F50 instead of 4F40 to send a letter to Germany, Greece or another country of that sort!).
Right, that's it for the tricks about the equipment (we've covered discs, the outside of the CPC, hooking the CPC up to a HI-FI system, and sendings). The equipment is known as the HARD.
Let's move on to the SOFT, meaning the software... We talked about crunching at the start of this column! But one question comes up: how do you decrunch a file crunched with CHEESE CRUNCHER 1.1 by Antoine PITROU (without ZENITH 2 having been used)? Indeed, imagine... You've got a demo and you want to rip the sprites? You take SUPER MONITOR RAZORMAID MIX 1994 by Antoine PITROU and load the crunched file. Note down the file's start address. Take that address and add 177 (=#B1) to it. "Poke" the value 201 (=#C9) at that address. Then take the next two values (in hexadecimal), and if, for example, you find #00 and at the next address #10, that will mean the real start address of your file is #1000. (Don't forget: low byte before high byte!). Right, you go back to the start address and execute it. The program will "hand control back", and there you go, your file is decrunched and all you have to do is rip the sprites! To execute the program, jump to the address you found earlier (in our example it's at #1000...) and there you are. One problem can occur with SUPER MONITOR RAZORMAID MIX 1994 though: the screen gets redefined rather weirdly, which gets in the way of watching the program run...
If you're interested in this kind of tricks about decrunching files, I could do a special column next time on all the recent crunchers, well, if you want it (give me your opinion!)...
I could have talked to you about protections, but I already covered them in the first issue of GHOUL'S FANZ... Although if you want, I could also make them into a special feature in one of the upcoming issues of GHOUL'S FANZ!
Right, that's it for this article. Sorry I couldn't say more about the SOFT, but I'm short of ideas... Give me some!

Translated from the text published in 1994.
The aim of this article is to answer one question: "IS THE CPC DEAD?"...
Obviously, I can't answer that question directly...
The idea for this article came to me when STEPH (of NEPHILIM) replied to a letter I had sent him (an offer to subscribe to the fanzine RUNDSCHLAG...).
He informed me that he had ditched the CPC in June 1993 (by the way, he's founded a new crew on PC called DIRTY, made up of 18 members...). I'm going to show you the end of his letter...
"[...] I think the CPC survived a good while, until 93/94 to be precise. Back then, saying that fanzines and demos were necessary was true. Now it's another matter. The users are down to a handful now; and the Amiga and PC scenes are exploding. I'm convinced there are more people on the C64 scene than on the CPC scene. (There are annual competitions, and the routines being coded are incredible: DOOM-style 3D,...)."
That letter churned me up for quite some time, it's true...
The CPC scene is made up of few people, that's true. But outside this scene, there are users who only use their CPC to play games... It's sad to say, but they surely outnumber all the demomakers and fanzimakers put together...
But everyone, at the start, was one of those "gamers", you have to admit it... That's why you should always help the little newcomers... Well, that's my opinion.
So, the CPC scene — is it dead?
Me, I say no... Indeed, fewer and fewer groups are leaving. New ones are even turning up (I'm thinking in particular of ARKOS and SCORPION...). What's more, productions are raining down on us (fanzines, demos...) and some groups are creating superb megademos (POWER SYSTEM, CHAOS...). And the CPC scene in Germany is still very much present (there are still game publishers on CPC), and the CPC scene in Greece is poking its nose out thanks to the group CHAOS...
There you go, I think this REPORTAGE column will have managed to satisfy you...

Ha ha, time for a bit of a laugh... This new column, which has nothing to do with the CPC, is pretty cooool, well, I think so anyway...
I'm going to run through a whole list of the famous "Mr and Mrs X have a son..." jokes. Sure, it's not complete, but it has the merit of being pretty big...
For those who don't know them, here's an example. You read "PROVIST have a son... and further along Alain". So that gives: "Mr and Mrs PROVIST have a son. What do they call him?" Answer: Alain, because "A L'INPROVISTE". Watch out, sometimes the surname comes before the first name... OK? You've got it, so off we go... (cool, it's even sorted in alphabetical order!).
One little thing to add all the same: my thanks to my brother for bringing me this list, taken from the Internet News, and to the guy (durosàecoledoc) who put them in Hunour.fr...

That's it, it's the end! I hope you'll have enjoyed this issue, which took a lot of work on my part...
So I'll leave you now, but don't cry, you'll find the next issue of GHOUL'S FANZ in just 2 short months!
On that note, I'll leave you with a little demo I coded for the end of ACID MUSIC BOX 2... (There's a little bug where my address is, it's not there in the original version (that's down to the many crunchings this demo has been through!))...
