There is no shortage of toolkits for building applications — MFC, Qt, wxWindows, to name only those. Whatever their complexity and whatever they implement, they remain the essential layer between the developer and the operating system, and choosing one shapes the design of everything laid on top. The set runs on into a piece on each: the MFC given away with Visual Studio, Trolltech’s Qt and its reputation for portability, and wxWindows, which shows that free need not mean poor.
